In the 9th. paragraph of his
letter of the 15th. May the Chief Justice refers to having
previously laid before me the question of providing him
with a personal clerk who should be independent of the
Registry and who should be within call. I annex for Your
Lordship's information a copy of Sir Francis Piggott's
letter of the 3rd. June, 1905, in which he asked inter
alia for a Secretary, and of my reply dated the 26th. of
that month giving reasons why in my opinion no addition
was necessary to the Clerical Staff provided for the
Supreme Court.
8.
I have now the honour to submit
for Your Lordship's ruling whether
(1) The number of Judges of the Supreme
Court should be increased from two to three.
(2) Criminal Sessions should be bi-monthly
instead of monthly as heretofore.
(3) An allowance should be made to the
Chief Justice for a Private Secretary.
